ELIZABETHTOWN — T. Spooner’s Diner has opened its doors in Elizabethtown with a wide combination of breakfast and lunch specialties.
The establishment uses the moniker of its proprietor, Tracy Spooner, as well as a giant eating utensil of the same name adorning the façade.
No newcomer to the gourmet profession, Spooner said, “I have been doing this for over 40 years.”
This includes being the food and beverage director at the Lake Placid Club. Spooner has also catered parties that ranged from 100 to 5,000. Although he has been asked for his recipes by “Gourmet” magazine, “I have turned them down,” Spooner said.
Spooner prides himself on his fare.
“Soups and sauces are my specialties,” he said. “I create what I call ‘boomer’ food. It’s what your mother used to make but you can no longer get. I want the customer to perceive getting a value for their dollar. This has been made easier with the support of the family.”
Spooner said they make everything from scratch. This is evidenced by the fact that even the potato chips that are served with sandwiches are created in his kitchen.
Among the breakfast offerings is a pocket sandwich created with fried bread dough filled with scrambled eggs and combined with a selection of meats and cheeses. Breakfast club sandwiches, burritos and quesadillas round out the morning menu.
For lunch, even the soup de jour selection is unique as Spooner offers four to five soups daily and patrons may order a “soup sampler,” which presents the opportunity to indulge in three four-ounce portions. Sandwiches from corned beef to veggie, as well as specialty salads, are available.
On the hot dogs, a merged Michigan topping is offered.
“Our sauce is a blend of the two regional styles, the hot and snappy version of the Plattsburgh area and the sweet version served south of Elizabethtown,” Spooner said. “It’s just the right amount of sweet and heat,”
Spooner’s, located at 7567 Court St. (Routes 9 and 9N) in Elizabethtown, is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. To place an order, call 873-3299. To check the day’s specials, call 637-4567.
