New health-insurance company introduced

PLATTSBURGH — A new health-insurance company was introduced during the recent Health Care Forum hosted by the North Country Chamber of Commerce.

Kane Pigliavento, an outreach manager at Health Republic Insurance of New York, said the company provides insurance for individuals and small businesses. Coverage will be available through the New York State Department of Health portal starting Oct. 1.

Health Republic is a 501(c)29 nonprofit health-insurance company under the Affordable Care Act, he said, and is the only such cooperative in New York state.

“We don’t have shareholders,” Pigliavento said. “Our profits are mandated to keep our premiums low and improving benefits.”

The company offers three plans. EssentialCare is its standard plan offered in New York.

PrimarySelect provides for no co-pay costs for visits to the consumer’s selected primary-care physician.

PrimarySelect EPO also does that, but the primary-care physician comes from a narrow list of approved providers. In the North Country, it is only available in Essex County, not in Clinton or Franklin.

Pigliavento said all their coverages meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

Their target audience is businesses with 50 or fewer employees, independent contractors, budding entrepreneurs, the working uninsured and what he called “boomerang kids,” those who have returned to live with their parents.

Health Republic offers the lowest coverage price points in New York, he said.

It uses the MagnaCareExtra provider network, which allows access to more than 70,000 providers. The company works with US Script to provide access to medications, with no co-pay for a number of generic medications for those with either of the PrimarySelect coverages.

Consumers can also receive up to 30 percent on complementary and alternative medical services and fitness centers through a partnership with Healthways WholeHealth Network, which has about 43,000 providers.

Pigliavento said they are looking to build a great relationship with the North Country community.

“We’re truly focused on the people in this room and the people without service in New York state and our demographic,” he said.
