PLATTSBURGH — Boutique style at consignment prices.
That’s the slogan at Caché Elegante, located at 26 City Hall Place in the City of Plattsburgh. Owner Barbara Hugus said she specializes in new and slightly used ladies’ fashions, vintage and hand-crafted jewelry, purses and other accessories.
“I’ve always loved retail and I love fashion,” she said. “I’m going for a boutique look.”
MANY BRANDS AVAILABLE
Hugus said she has fashions for women of all sizes and age groups. Available brands include Chico’s, Talbots, Anne Klein, J. Jill, New York & Company, Free People, Gap, Banana Republic and Joe’s Jeans, among others.
On the accessory side, fascinators are popular this time of year, with prom season coming up. It is a decoration-type piece typically worn in your hair, usually to the side, and they have become more popular with the increased interest in Downton Abbey.
There is also a variety of home-decor items, such as chairs, glass ware, stands, mirrors, paintings and more, many from local artisans. Hugus said she expects to have more vintage and antique furniture available in the future.
“When you come to Caché Elegante, you can find items for your personal use and to decorate your house,” she said.
One jewelry line features pieces made from silverplate forks, spoons and knives. A fork, for instance, was made to look like an elephant with four tines as legs and one bent to make the trunk.
Hugus said she also has doll clothes to fit 18-inch dolls, such as the American Girl doll line. She said you never know what you might find at the store.
“I had a woman come in recently who needed five gifts for five family members,” Hugus said. “She found it all here.”
Caché Elegante is one of several fashion and consignment shops that have opened in the region in the last few years.
“I think people enjoy dressing nicely for less,” Hugus said.
She is presently accepting clothes on consignment for the spring and summer months. Hugus has put out a flier that states, “Summer’s in the air. It’s time to turn your cluttered closet into cash.”
She would love to have vendors come in with enough that she could dedicate a shelving unit to their goods.
“I’m open to discussion on that,” she said.
Hugus moved the business to City Hall Place in March 2012 after one year on Brinkerhoff Street.
“I believe this is a better location for me,” she said, adding that is based on more drive-by traffic and a larger floor space.
In addition to on-street parking, there is a small lot across the street and the Durkee Street parking lot is only a block away.
The main renovation was to repaint the walls a rich gold hue, which she said really accents the brick walls and tin ceiling.
“This space has character,” Hugus said.
She likes being part of the downtown business community. She said City Hall Place especially has had a nice rebirth.
Hugus has hosted two successful fashion shows in house, and plans to do more in the future. Hugus offers Ladie’s Nights, where a group of friends can arrange for an after-hours night of shopping.
Originally from Cadyville, Hugus said she spent many years in the retail industry. She said she had always wanted to be a buyer for a store, but now she gets to choose what goes into her own store.
She continues to welcome new customers on a daily basis, and really enjoys meeting new people.
“Once they get in here, they love it,” Hugus said.
Caché Elegante is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. on Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Payment is by cash or local check.
