Kayak Shack owners open new location

PLATTSBURGH — Adirondack Coast Paddleboard Company is the newest addition to the Kayak Shack family of businesses.

The new store, located at 498 Route 3 next door to Champlain National Bank, opened the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Patty Husband, who owns the business with her husband, Dave, said the new store offers an alternative to their seasonal businesses — the original Kayak Shack at 3999 Route 9 in the Town of Plattsburgh and Baggs’ Landing Paddlesports Centre at 3004 Route 9 on the AuSable River next to the Carpenter Flats bridge.

“This will be our year-round home,” she said of the new store. “We always thought about having a year-round location.”

Features high traffic

The new location provides great exposure due to the extremely high volume of traffic on Route 3 and Exit 37 of Interstate 87.

The store allows them to display many more of their stand-up paddleboards. She said that sport is the fastest-growing form of outdoor recreation in 2013.

They have 20 or more paddleboards on display at any time with models from Rogue, Pau Hana, NSP, Bic and Traitor.

“Traitor is a line we actually designed and had manufactured,” Husband said.

There are boards for all abilities, including boards specifically made for whitewater, fitness and racing. Materials include fiberglass, carbon fiber, polyethylene, bamboo and one with a dek made from recycled coconut husks.

There are also several lines of kayaks on display, including models by Perception and Hurricane. Husband said the latter is their biggest seller.

They carry Werner paddles for both kayaks and paddleboards. Accessories for those sports are also displayed throughout the store.

They also have a variety of water-oriented active wear and footwear. That includes clothing by companies such as Merrell, O’Neill and Level 6.

Pre-Christmas opening

Husband said it was great to be able to open before Christmas so customers can get that special gift for the paddler in their life.

The new store has four additional employees. In the summer, there are between 15 and 20 people employed at the various locations.

That includes five instructors certified by either the American Canoe Association, British Canoe Association or the World Standup Paddleboard Association.

“People come to us because we have people who know what they’re doing both in the store and on the water,” Husband said.

Husband said they plan to offer Introduction to Standup Paddleboard lessons on Saturdays starting Jan. 25 at the swimming pool at the CVPH Wellness Center on New York Road. Husband said they also plan to offer floating yoga with positions performed on a paddleboard.

The Husbands opened the original Kayak Shack in 2007. They were honored as Small Business of the Year by the North Country Chamber of Commerce in 2010.

The Baggs’ Landing Paddlesports Center opened in 2012. It is on a smooth section of the AuSable River that is a short paddle from Lake Champlain. It is the site for lessons, which are available for those age 7 or older.

Staff offer Intro to Kayaking, Youth Intro to Kayaking, Youth Intro to Paddleboard, Youth Paddling Day Camps and Half Day Camps and Family Paddling. Prices include watercraft and equipment.

Many tours featured

Tours have been very popular, Husband said. Those include Bluff Point Lighthouse Tours, Sunset Tours, Full Moon Tours, Father’s Day Family Paddle and Family Fun Night.

Adirondack Coast Paddleboard Company is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Husband said those hours may be shortened in January.

Payment is by cash, check or major credit card, and layaway is available.
