New Kinney Drugs store opens

PLATTSBURGH — Kinney Drugs will host a grand opening celebration Saturday at its newest store at 6 Veterans Lane in the City of Plattsburgh.

The store actually opened Monday, located next to its former location at 52 Boynton Ave.

City of Plattsburgh Mayor Donald Kasprzak said the new store is a welcome update to Kinney’s presence in the city, where it has another one on Cornelia Street and one on New York Road.

There are also two Kinney locations in the Town of Plattsburgh.

“As mayor, I am pleased with the continued business growth in the City of Plattsburgh,” he said. “The new Kinney (Drugs) is a perfect example of the investment by this company in Plattsburgh.”

The new store is approximately 11,600 square feet, up from about 9,000 square feet at the previous location. The design is intended to offer an enhanced shopping experience and an expanded selection of health and wellness products, company officials say.

Kinney Drugs Director of Marketing Jennifer Whalen said the larger store enabled the company to hire two new employees, for a total of 35. She said growth in that location could mean more new hires in the future.

The company continues to hold the lease to the old building; Whalen said they were unsure about plans for that property.

The grand-opening event starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony slated for 10 a.m. The first 200 customers on Saturday can each receive a free gift, and everyone visiting the store that day can register to win one of nine grand prizes, which include a $100 Kinney Drugs shopping spree.

There will be free face-painting for children from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and free balloons from the Kinney Kare Bear.

Complimentary refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Free blood glucose and cholesterol screenings will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. An Excellus Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance adviser will be there to review customers’ health-plan options from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

And pharmacists will offer personal consultations to review medications and answer questions about prescriptions.

The plan for the new store was approved by the City of Plattsburgh Planning Board in December. The city created a dedicated left-turn lane in the eastbound lane of Boynton Avenue to Veterans Lane in an effort to alleviate traffic concerns during the repaving of Boynton Avenue this past summer.

The new layout is expected to offer improved accessibility to the pharmacy department and includes a drive-up window and a pharmacist consultation area, store officials said.

Kinney has continued to offer free prescription delivery from the new location. Automatic prescription refills are available through the ReadyScripts program, and immunizations for seasonal flu, meningitis and shingles are also provided.

Kinney Drugs also offers KinneyCare, a discount prescription plan that provides a 90-day supply of more than 300 generic prescription medications for $11.99, or less than 14 cents per day.

The company has 99 stores in New York and Vermont.
